Trump: ‘I think we should let this go’
President Donald Trump has said he wants to let his son-in-law Jared Kushner’s involvement in his family’s real estate empire go, saying he thinks Kushner is doing a great job and should be let go.
Speaking to reporters in his office at the White House on Friday, Trump said he did not know whether his son, Jared, and Kushner were being “treated fairly.”
“We are going to let this all go,” Trump said, as reporters stood around, microphones pressed in.
“Jared is a fantastic guy and I think he’s doing a fantastic job.
We are going let this pass.”
He added: “He is not being treated fairly.”
Kushner’s role in Trump’s real-estate empire has been the subject of scrutiny amid the investigation into whether Trump’s associates colluded with Russian officials to meddle in the 2016 election.
The president and his son have denied any wrongdoing.
Trump has also said that Kushner’s role was not his responsibility and that he was being treated unfairly.
“He is a brilliant lawyer.
I know him very well, he’s been treated fairly.
I think we can let this thing pass,” Trump told reporters.
“I think Jared is a terrific guy and he’s a terrific person.
I don’t know if I should be doing that.
I’m just letting it go.”
Asked about whether Kushner should be allowed to stay on the Trump family’s payroll as the president has asked him to, Trump replied: “We’ll see what happens.
He’s a good person.
Karen Pence, Trump’s former Indiana attorney general and now the vice president, said the president had made the decision to let the elder Kushner go.
“We don’t have to wait for the facts,” Pence said.
“He’s not a good lawyer.
He should not be doing this.
He needs to get out of there.”
Trump has not yet released any of his tax returns, which he says he will release on Monday, and Pence said the Trump Organization was working on a plan to release the returns.
